The Age of Restriction, Tech edition
Remember when you got punished? what did your parents take away from you? betcha it was outdoor privileges or television. If you were a talky girl (like myself) they took the phone away.
Short Round fucked up this past week on two levels. She neglected to do any homework while on spring break, payed too much attention to chat and Myspace, and fell behind on handing her assignments in. She also stayed awake until past midnight several nights during the week which ultimately led to a crash landing and a day out of school to recuperate. How? Well, chat & Myspace were the biggest culprits, this was freely admitted to. She actually thought that admitting to her shortcoming wasn’t going to afford her a punishment. Nope. In the age of the internet, restriction of the virtual playground is the way to cause grief among your child. Tears were shed, eyes rolled. (now I know how MY mom felt when I rolled my eyes in front of her!) She wailed that she might “Miss” something….
Times certainly have changed. you can stay in touch with your friends 24/7 now a days. In order to not miss a phone call, I usually had to hang around my Bell Atlantic issued analog phone until it rang. If I was out, well…I missed the call. The funny thing is, I can’t imagine life like that any more. How odd.
I also know what that saying “This hurts me more then it hurts you” feels like. I hated punishing her, but fuck—she deserved it.

Uh-oh.
I hate punishment too …
but …
but …
but …
good parents punish for good reasons.
If you don’t punish/discipline your kid acts like an entitled little punk in public and I won’t have it!
It’s hard to know what’s right … and it’s easy to second-guess yourself when you’re a parent, but the gut’s right. Gotta go with the gut.
And, she’ll get over it, but she might not be able to get over herself if she was allowed to do whatever she wants.
I’m sure you know that what you did was right, but I know it’s nice to hear from another parent that this is so:
You did right mama. You did right.
