honestly i do not think that that the vow of poverty is global, it is more attached to the ascetic types such as monks and religious. every group has their own list of vows. of course, this is off the top of my head.
and technically it’s not about the bottom line, it’s more the importance one attaches to the objects in their own lives. for example, two people could own exactly the same car (within reason ~ i think you have a harder case if it’s a ferrari or something like that) but if one person worships it and the other doesn’t, the worshipper is kind of not doing the poverty thing.
finally, i think to take an institution to task it might be helpful to have comparative numbers regarding how their charities benefit the poor relative to other organizations.
of course, perhaps i am applying reason to this issue, which might not be the point

Now I suddenly have a Dead Kennedys song in my head:
“kill kill kill kill kill the poor…”

I had that line from History of the World Pt I:
Roman Senator: should we build houses for the rich or feed the poor? How does the Senate Vote?
Senate: FUCK THE POOR!
Roman Senator: Good!

I doubt the pope has any real significant bank account or assets. They dress him up grandly beacuse he is a symbol of a faith. Thats it.
