I was a bit mystified at this one, too, but then I learned that Saakashvili is US-educated and claims to want a US-style democracy; I don’t know enough yet to know whether he means an ideal US-style democracy or what we have today. Regardless, US support for such a government is kind of a no-brainer, irony or not. And if you BELIEVE that the reason we invaded Iraq was to supplant a dictatorship with a US-style democracy, blatantly false though that is, then there is no inconsistency.
Personally, I think the chances of Iraq having true democracy went to hell as soon as they wrote Islam into the constitution; not because it’s Islam, but because it’s any specific religion at all. Although with any luck we’ll have an Iraq-style democracy here soon enough…
