of Our xBox 360. It died just as we were about to plug in Guitar Hero II. We are hopeful that the folks at Microsoft breathe new life into our green box of love soon.
*sniff*
Our Family has been collectively obsessed with Heroes, and rightly so. It’s Badass. It does, despite what anyone says, borrow from several great works of comic books–in my opinion, heavily nodding towards X-Men. (Uhm…Stan Lee was a guest star….Duhh, people.) And before we get into any screaming matches, all great works have inspiration. If the X-Men inspired the series creator, then I say, awesome.
Since we’re only on Season 1, I’ve been perusing the tubes for good comparisons while trying NOT to glimpse any spoilers. I’ve found that to be simply impossible. While I have NOT read any spoilers, I do want to read what people have to say about the various nods to some classic characters.
I can’t really write much on the topic myself, having just ventured into the world of superhero story lines after railing against them for quite some time. (I was an indie comic purist—by the way—do you guys hear that diabolical laugh? That is my husband laughing while he says, HA! TOLD YOU SO! while doing some silly victory dance. No, seriously. It’s true. I can picture it now.) Anyhow, I was really surprised at how blatantly political some storylines can be. Take Secret Wars: The Pulse, for instance. It’s a running commentary on the news media and it’s reliance on sensationalism. The X-Men has been an allegory for the shunning of anyone who isn’t the same as a white, Christian male. The new Ultimates is DEFINITELY an updated social commentary on the current administration. And Samuel L. Jackson makes a BADASS Nick Fury. Don’t care what any of you Marvel Purist say.
So, on to the Heroes badassery. Hands down, Hiro is the Hero of the show. The Sword is the best indication of that. Second choice? well…Sorry, but Peter Petrelli is starting to get pretty bad ass. The Five years into the Future” episode should have played on the fight between him an Syler just a bit more. It was nearly as bad ass as the shoot ‘em up scene in the Matrix. (that’s the First Matrix. I’ve never seen the second or third ones.I just refuse to taint my eyes.) Hubby will disagree, he thinks that Peter is a pussy. As for Villians, I’d have to say Syler is a neato villian—the brain eating (can I assume that is what he does to take on the DNA?) is a bad ass angle. But–as for Villians go—Magneto is still the best one ever and I can’t seem to draw a decent comparison to any of the Heroes characters. Perhaps there simply isn’t a magneto like Character. Bummer.
I should get back to what I do best now. Bitching about politics.
Sometimes, I wish we had some heroes to defeat the crap that is going on in DC, though. *sigh*
Yesterday was THE BOMB.
We started out with discussing Ed, Edd and Eddy with the shows creator and voice actors. Danny Antonucci is one cool motherfucker. He hung out with the people who attended the panel afterwards, sigining autographs and talking to adults and kids about his wayyyy cool Cartoon.
After that, I headed off to see Sergio Aragones, illustrator for Mad, Creator of Groo. Having been a Mad magazine fan since 1982 and a Groo comic collector, this was nearly *MY* Stan Lee. The Panel was WONDERFUL and I had the utmost pleasure of talking at length to Mr. Aragones afterwards about japanese anime, specifically Hayao Miyazaki. It was a surprise to talk abut our favorite scene in “My Neighbor Totoro” and find out we both enjoyed the same scene. It also made certain things that groo did (like the fact that he carries two samurai swords) make sense.
I was in heaven!
Then we attended a great panel with Max Brooks and George A. Romero. Zombies! Zombies! Zombies! George Romero is also the bomb. What makes him so damn cool is that he doesn’t give a shit abut the Hollywood Bullshit and does what he wants. He mainly looks for independent investors and creates movies for the love of the movie and the social commentary he puts into his work. (watch land of the dead and hear the words, “We don’t negotiate with terrorists” Draw your own conclusions on what his latest commentaries are) George will be sigining autographs all day today and I will DEFINITLY get him to sign something.
Today , I will be attending the Boondocks panel with Aaron McGruder. Since Aaron Mcgruder and I grew up in the same city, knowing A LOT of the same people, this one will be fun. Tonight is Kevin Smith’s discussion, along with a bunch of other cool ass shit.
This trip has been worth every thing.
*nerds out some more*
First of all, I could actually live in San Diego. It’s urban, bohemien and very very cool. Probably super expensive to live, but…eh.
Seondly, there is nothing like nerd love. While we were standing in line for “preview night” after getting our badges, we happened to notice a couple to the right of us making out pretty heavily. The guy kept egging the girl on as if he hadn’t ever been kissed until he met her. (this is probably true, though.) It struck us as mildly hilarious.
This place is HUGE and there is A LOT to see. Not as many costumes as I had anticipated, but, like I said, it was just preview night. We have four more days. The preview of the exhibit hall was amazing. We saw a NEW lego Star Wars for the Wii–which made me giddy with excitement of using the Wiimotes to swing light sabers around. Short Round scored a pre release of the new Teen Fantasy Novel “Betwixt”, and there are so many comics to chose from I nearly peed myself.
and that was just preview night.
Stay Tuned : Today will encompass Sergio Argones, Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars) and other notables.
*goes to nerd out*
Earlier in the week I thought I was a goner. I thought I was going to have to sit this Otakon out. You see, On Tuesday, I came down with some nasty cold. I was dying on Wednesday and was seriously thinking I was NOT GOING TO MAKE IT. After nyQuill, DayQuill and some sleep, I was about 75% on Friday. I decided that I couldn’t bear to miss my favorite convention of the year.
This year was a bit different. This year, I sort of fell into chairing a panel and was invited to do it again next year. Since I am now discussing anime on a panel at a convention, I believe that I am a dork in an offical capacity. Unless, uh…I’ve already been an “offical” dork.
We leave Monday Morning for the next convention in San Deigo. Watch this blog for live updates from Comic Con International, starting July 25, 2007.
*geeks out*
They released the full scheduling program over the weekend. It makes things easier so that we can actually plan out our days, decide what is not that kid friendly and plan well needed breaks throughout the day so we don’t Con ourselves to death.
On another note, after perusing the past guest lists, it seems America’s favorite blonde airhead is a repeat con goer (nerd love?). No, you’re right. I do not get it either and sincerely hope that she is NOT there this year. Hopefully, she will be too exhausted from her horrid days spent incarcerated.
Of Course, Stan lee will be there!
Comic Con in San Diego is three weeks away and they just released a sneek peek of panels with some ultra cool people in attendance.
So you fellow Nerds can get Uber Jealous, here are a few people that I will be able to breathe the same air as:
Kevin Smith
Brian Posehn
Matt Groening
Robert Downey Jr.
Clive Owen (Ladies, you saw that correctly. Clive motherfucking Owen. I will do what I can to make sure I have a photo taken with him, too. and I’ll post that shit right here!)
Jon Favreau
George A. Romero
And Many MANY other nerdy types that the commoners don’t really know, or care to know, but we’re jacked up to see.
*gets uber excited*
As I was checking my random feeds this AM, I found a link to special guests appearing at Comic Con International in San Diego. With 69 Days left until we embark on Geek Week 2007, I had to check it out.
Well, fellow bloggy nerds…read it an weep. We (that is Mister Fatman and Short Round and I) will be in the presence of the Zombie movie god himself: George A. Romero.
Not to mention some other great guests so far: Sergio Aragones, Ray Bradbury, Warren Ellis.
Now all they have to include is Bruce Campbell, Kevin Smith, Seth Green and Stan Lee and I’ll be A-OK.
