…but not in the same way that one might think.
I never usually blog about short round, the offspring of the holy Fatman. That would make this a dreaded mommyblog and we all know how much I LOATHE those sickening creations. No one really gives a shit about the daily habits of my child. Anyway, an amusing anecdote hardly makes this thing into a mommyblog so I promise not to turn this into an everyday affair.
Short Round had a dance last night. Since she is in 7th grade, the dance was a big deal. I had signed up to chaperone for this grand affair and ended up being a bit late because of spending a large majority of the day at the friggen mall. I showed up dressed like I had walked out of the Hot Topic (this, yes, is normal for me) because I had no time to change and look just a little respectable. I had my Ralphie from the Simpsons tee shirt on that said “Pick me” with his finger up his nose. I walked in, took off my coat, surveyed the room and noticed the nasty stares from the rest of the Moms sitting around the room. Oops.
Now I already know that I am universally disliked by the PTA moms of this catholic school. (yep…yep…) Why not just fuel the damn fire, right? No, not fuel…just be myself. I couldn’t care less what they thought of me. My child is well adjusted smart kid who is raised in a good home. My appearance and interests don’t really matter if I’m doing all the right things. So what El hubbo and I support wholeheartedly her deep interest in anime, video games and reading sci fi/fantasy. Errr…well..we actively encourage it.
When the DJ started playing some AC/DC and some old Aerosmith, I busted with the air guitar and started dancing with the girls. I knew the words, I danced and sang and just had fun. Later on, as I stood talking with the other cool mom, the boy that all girls hold torches for walked up to me and said, “Your tee shirt says Pick me, so I’d like to pick you for this dance!”
So, I danced with him. We had a nice conversation about music and what kind I listened too.
Well, the boys never let Short Round into their world, even though she has similar interests. They didn’t believe that she had every game console in the house. They didn’t believe that her parents took her to anime conventions and Weezer concerts. They simply thought she was embellishing to make friends.
I scored a lot of cool points with the kids last night.I probably made a lot of the frumpy moms feel even more detached from their children’s world. Most of all, I validated all the stories Short Round would tell. I suspect they will all be coming over to play xbox 360 soon.
Most of all, I had a damn good time.
